Research Specialty:                DNA replication and cell cycle regulation in mammalian cells
About Dr. Fanning: Dr. Fanning received her Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany. She completed post-doctoral work with Rolf Knippers and had Dr. Doerfler as her PhD advisor at the University of Konstanz in Germany. She held faculty positions at the University of Konstanz and the University of Munich, Germany before joining the faculty of Vanderbilt University in 1995. She is currently Stevenson Professor of Biological Sciences and a Professor of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The long term goal of her research is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control DNA replication in mammalian cells. Dr. Fanning has mentored many graduate and undergraduate students who have gone on to careers in both research and medicine. She leads a strong research program composed of post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and undergraduate researchers.
