pith - the center part of a twig, usually a different color or texture from the surrounding tissue


continuous pith is uniformly colored with no divisions, as in this Carya ovata (shagbark hickory) twig  hires


chambered pith has hollow spaces between woody partitions that divide the pith, as in this Juglans nigra (black walnut) twig  hires
